Stone Town Tour
Stone Town may not bear a particularly romantic name, but it is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar where little has changed over the last 200 years.
The architectural style of Stone Town buildings is a unique mixture of various influences and cultures. It is a city of winding narrow alleys, bustling bazaars, mosque and grand Arab houses whose original owners envied each other over the extravagance of their dwellings.
This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors: there are more than 500 different examples of this beautiful art in the old city. You can spend many hours and days just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.
Visiting the House of Wonders, the former slave market for East African slave trade, and the Arab Fort, among other interesting sites, is a fascinating insight into the essence of Zanzibar. Stone Town also has excellent art galleries, clothing boutiques and gift shops with plenty of souvenirs and handcrafts to choose from.
A Stone Town Tour is done on foot and will take you almost 3 hours through the narrow streets. The tour through this colourful and varied city is lead by a knowledgeable tour guide who not only knows funny anecdotes about Stone Town but also cruel and sad stories about the life of the older times.
The half-day trip includes the guide and all entrance fees.
The 3 hour City Tour costs $20 USD per person (excluding tips).
